City Council race heating up

Challenges set for four at-large seats

HUNTSVILLE — Two more applications have been filed for Huntsville City Council elections in November, creating contested races in all four at-large council seats on the ballot.

Don Johnson, a business consultant and Huntsville resident of nearly nine years, will seek at-large position three on the council, challenging incumbent Charles Forbus.

James Fitch, Deputy Chief of the Sam Houston State University Police Department and a Huntsville resident of 14 years, will challenge incumbent Dalene Zender for at-large position three.

Forbus, Zender and councilmembers Lanny Ray and Melissa Templeton, who respectively hold at-large positions four and two, will all seek re-election in November.

As of July 30, retail manager Lydia Montgomery had applied to challenge Templeton for position two, while jeweler Keith Olson had applied to challenge Ray in position four.

According to Huntsville City Secretary Lee Woodward, Johnson’s application was received on Aug. 3, while Fitch’s was received on Tuesday.

The four at-large seats are the only issues currently on the city ballot this November.

The city will continue accepting ballot applications through the state filing deadline of Aug. 24. Applications are available in the City Secretary’s office for a fee of one dollar.

“We are happy to speak with anyone who is interested in learning more about the process or qualifications,” Woodward said. “A great deal of information is also available through the City website at www.huntsvilletx.gov, such as the City Charter, Rules of Procedure, City Budget, etc., and the archived Council meetings.”

For more information, call the City Secretary’s office at (936) 291-5403.
