A Grapeland man made an unexpected trip to the Walker County Jail after a large quantity of drugs were found in his vehicle during a traffic stop.
Herbert L. Johnson, 62, was arrested by officers with the Texas Department of Public Safety early Wednesday morning for delivery of 720 pounds of marijuana.
Johnson was stopped for speeding at the 106 mile marker on Interstate 45. When Trooper Gabino Monjaras approached the vehicle, Johnson jumped out and ran before he was eventually apprehended in a pasture 100 yards off the road.
“He’s being charged for 720 pounds of marijuana,” said DPS Sergeant Stephen McNeil. “The marijuana was found in tunnel covers.”
Johnson is also being charged with resisting arrest, evading arrest, and providing a false identification as well as a parole violation. He was sentenced to 25 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for a 1990 robbery in Dallas County. Johnson was recently paroled following a sentence of a year and three months for forgery in Houston County in 2009.
Johnson being held without bond in the Walker County Jail for a possible parole violation following his recent arrests. He has a combined bond of 102,000 for the delivery of marijuana, resisting arrest and evading charges.
