Bethlehem journey events set

By Kristin Edwards
Staff Reporter

Preparations are already well under way for the 2008 Journey Through Bethlehem, an event organized by Walker County churches and individuals to re-create life in Bethlehem at the time of Jesus Christ’s birth.

The event, to be held at the Walker County Fairgrounds on Dec. 5 and 6 from 6 to 9 p.m. each night, brings in hundreds of participants and guests each year not only from Walker County, but from around the country, as well.

“Journey Through Bethlehem is a wonderful way to kick off the Christmas season, and we invite the community to join us in making this another successful year,” said Marta Edwards, event assistant. “Anyone including singles, families or church groups are welcome to participate — last year, we had a total of 300 participants and a total attendance of 2,645 people.”

During the Journey Through Bethlehem event, guests will have the opportunity to visit several booths within the Walker County Fairgrounds which will show what life was like during the time of Christ.

As well as seeing actors who portray characters like King Herod, Roman soldiers, the three wise men, shepherds and angels, guests will also be able to see camels, donkeys, sheep and several shops designed based on the story of Christ’s birth.

Guests also have the opportunities to dance with a wedding party, have their names written in Hebrew or learn how to weave a basket.

“Journey Through Bethlehem is the one time of the year when I’m astounded to see the community come together in unity for a common goal,” said Joel Michaelson, event participant. “It’s a great moment to witness as literally hundreds of people volunteer their time, efforts, and talent to contribute to one common goal — spreading the word of God through the re-enactment of the birth of Jesus Christ.”

Michaelson is involved in Journey Through Bethlehem as one of the many actors who take part in re-creating Christ’s birth.

“I play a brazen role as captain of the guard in King Herod’s Court, and I enjoy all the interaction I have with the other members in this production,” he said. “The coordination of events, the timing of all the scenes, the reaction of the audience and the message we send are all impressive and notable elements of this particular event.

“If you are curious, come and Journey Through Bethlehem. You will not be disappointed and you will walk away with more than you came with.”

Ricky Cole, who has participated in the event for several years as the angel Gabriel, will take on a new role this year following the birth of his own son.

“For five years now, I have been Gabriel, but this year, I will have a new role,” Cole said. “The recent birth of my own son will have my family at the manger. I get to watch believers from all over the world come to admire the baby Jesus — my son.

“If you really want to experience the presence of God, go on a Journey Through Bethlehem.”
