HHS student killed in shooting identified

Walker County authorities have identified a 17-year-old Huntsville High School student killed last week in an accidental shooting at his home.

Brandon Kyle Smith was pronounced dead at Huntsville Memorial Hospital shortly after the incident, which occurred just after 8 p.m. on Nov. 18 at a home on Wood Farm Road.

In what has been called an “accidental” shooting by Sheriff’s Department investigators, Smith sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest from a .44 Magnum handgun.

Walker County sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene shortly after the incident, and administered CPR to Smith until emergency medical services arrived to transport him to the hospital.

He was pronounced dead by Walker County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Richard Duncan shortly after arrival at HMH.

The subsequent investigation by the Walker County Sheriff’s Office revealed that the shooting was most likely accidental, though the exact circumstances of the incident have not been disclosed.

A 16-year-old male at the scene was questioned by investigators on the night of the incident, and was questioned again this week, but no charges have been filed.

Funeral services were scheduled to be held Monday in Smith’s hometown of Anacoco, La.
