‘Main Event’ planning under way

Dubbed “The Main Event,” planning for the 2009 annual New Waverly Library Lunch and Auction on Nov. 21 is under way.

“The Main Event” starts at 10 a.m. and runs through 2:30 p.m. at the New Waverly Elementary School.

“The day promises to be a great fun day for all who attend,” said event coordinator David Vela. “We have activities planned activities for the entire family to enjoy. Lots of people have really pitched in to help bring the community together for a fun family day.”

The events include a country store, bake shop, face painting, fortune telling, a silent auction, a live auction and a talent show, with awards being given to the top three talent acts.

Vela, who is the drama director at Willis High School, has lived in New Waverly all his life and says “the library is a gem in the small town.”

“It is well worth the effort to keep it going, and this fundraiser is needed to help pay the bills as donations and activities such as this raise 60 percent of the annual budget,” Vela said. “We now have about 1,000 people per month who use our library and it grows monthly.”

Also planned is a talent show beginning at 11 a.m. Eight or nine acts will perform in the hour following.

A spaghetti lunch with all the trimmings begins serving at 11 and take-out is available. The live auction begins at 1 p.m. and runs until all items are sold.

“Another fun opportunity is our ‘Half-the-Cash-Pot,’ ” Vela said.

Tickets may be purchased at the door for $1 each or 7 for $5.

At the end of the live auction, a ticket is drawn. The winner gets a certain amount of the cash in the pot. The winner does not have to be present.

There will be a cake booth with homemade cakes and pies for sale, as well as a silent auction that begins when the doors open.

Tickets are $6 for adults through age 8 pre-sale, and $8 at the door. There are no pre-sale tickets for children 7 and under. Children at the door prices are $4.
