A Huntsville man was arrested Sunday under suspicion of driving while intoxicated after a single vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 190.
Brendon Dwayne Williams, 22, was driving a 2010 Hyundai Accent eastbound in the 900 block of U.S. 190 when the vehicle left the roadway, traveled approximately 200 feet, struck a culvert, and was airborne for approximately 100 feet.
The vehicle struck the ground front first and, according to witnesses, flipped end over end at least three times before settling.
Williams was able to escape the vehicle and was attempting to walk away from the scene when police arrived.
According to Senior Officer David McGann of the Huntsville Police Department, Williams was behaving “abnormally.”
“He appeared to be acting as if he was under the influence of an unknown substance,” McGann said.
Williams also said his girlfriend had been in the car with him, and that she had walked away into a nearby wooded area.
A search of the area found no one, and Williams’ girlfriend was later located at a local convenience store. She had not been involved in the accident.
Williams was transported to Huntsville Memorial Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries before being transported to the Walker County Jail.
Drug tests to determine if Williams was intoxicated, and if so, on what substance, are still pending.
