Wynne Home to debut new sales gallery

The Wynne Home Arts Center will debut its new sales gallery show on Friday with a reception honoring the artists.

The show focuses on “fiber arts,” utilizing various types of fibers and fabrics to construct artistic pieces including clothing and wall hangings.

Eighteen artists are represented in the more than 200 pieces for sale in the show. All are members of the Sam Houston Weavers and Spinners Guild.

Founded in 1990, the guild's focus is to develop the skills of aspiring fiber artists, regardless of skill level, as well as educating others on the wide variety of fiber arts available.

“People aren’t always sure what the proper terms are for what we do,” said Bette Sutton, member of the guild. “People will see you weaving something on a loom and call it knitting. What we do is show people just how much is out there with fiber arts and how many things you can do with fabric.

The show’s artists come from all over Southeast Texas to display their work, which includes everything from handspun socks to silk scarves to massive wall hangings, all made by hand.

All the pieces in the sales gallery will be for sale, with a percentage of all proceeds going to the Friends of the Wynne Home organization.

“The spinners and weavers have been big contributors to the Wynne Home since the beginning,” said Linda Pease, director of the arts center. “They’ve taught classes for us, they’ve played a big part in organizing, and they’ve just done so much, so we wanted to highlight their work with this show.”

The reception opening the show will take place on Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the Wynne Home, and will feature appearances by several of the artists.
