Accident victim airlifted to Houston hospital

By Matthew Jackson
Staff Reporter

One woman was injured in a pedestrian collision Monday evening in Huntsville as she was attempting to cross the street.

The woman, whose name was not released, was attempting to cross U.S. Highway 190 just east of Sycamore Avenue when the accident occurred at around 5:55 p.m.

According to investigating officer Joe Martinez of the Huntsville Police Depart-ment, the woman was crossing the street while two vehicles, a Chevy Cobalt and a Chevy Lumina, were traveling eastbound on 190 in the inside lane.

The vehicles were traveling single file, with the Lumina driving ahead of the Cobalt.

The driver of the Lumina noticed the woman, who was walking with another male pedestrian, and slowed down to allow her to cross the lane. The driver of the Cobalt did not see either pedestrian, and swerved into the curb lane to pass the Lumina.

When the driver of the Cobalt moved into the curb lane, it struck the female pedestrian head on and also struck the passenger side of the Lumina as the driver tried to swerve at the last minute to avoid the woman.

The woman sustained several possible injuries, including a fracture of her left femur and lacerations to her head after it struck the windshield of the Cobalt.

Officers from the Huntsville Police Department quickly responded to the scene with assistance from the Huntsville Fire Department and Huntsville-Walker County EMS.

When emergency personnel arrived, they found the female pedestrian conscious and alert. Shortly after the accident she was airlifted to Memorial Hermann hospital in Houston for treatment.

According to Martinez, the driver of the Chevy Cobalt was cited for driving without a license.

The accident is still under investigation by the HPD’s Accident Reconstruction Team.
