County Dems gather for Obama speech

Walker County Democrats gathered at their headquarters on the town square Thursday night to watch Democratic Party nominee Barack Obama give his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colo.

The party was coordinated between the Walker County Democrats and the Sam Houston State University Democrats. Food and drinks were provided.

The diverse crowd chatted with anticipation as one by one speakers appeared on the television to preface Obama’s speech.

“As someone as who has been around long enough to see Dr. King’s ‘I have a dream speech,’” Walker County Democratic Party chairman John Holcombe told the crowd, “I thank God I have lived to this day.”

Walker County Democratic Party president Connie Habern kicked off the party announcing that they are working to provide Saturday voting for the upcoming presidential election, as well as providing transportation for those who need to vote.

“We will take anyone who needs a ride,” said Habern.

“The first person I voted for was John F. Kennedy,” said City Councilman Charles Forbes. “He was a man that inspired the people, just like Obama.”

The talk running around the tables, over drinks and food, was all in anticipation of the upcoming election, and how it has invigorated the Democratic Party. Arlan Foster, who is running for state Representative in District 18, also stopped by.

As the clock ticked closer towards 9 p.m. people stopped talking and had their eyes were glued to the television screen.

Habern said the watch party was a success.
