Area school districts set for new year

The 2008-09 academic school year is just around the corner, and different schools and independent school districts have various dates and times set to begin the year.

For the majority of local schools, this school year will begin on Aug. 25, but check your school’s information for any further details.



Huntsville Independent School District

Classes will begin at all Huntsville Independent School District campuses on Aug. 25.

The 2008-09 academic year marks the first year of operation of the Gibbs Pre-K Center, and administrators are expecting right around 300 students for the first year.

At http://www.huntsville-isd.org, information concerning individual schools’ meet and greets and the supplies needed are currently available.

Student supply lists are also available at the child’s respective campus.

Huntsville Intermediate School may be reached at (936) 293-2717.

New Waverly Independent School District

For New Waverly Independent School District Students, classes for the 2008-09 school year will also begin on Aug. 25.

According to an administrative representative, the district experienced no significant turnover or change in student population since last school year.

Heritage Champions Academy

Heritage Champions Academy will start the school year on Aug. 25. Enrollment is ongoing, and those who need additional information can call the school at (936) 291-0203, or visit 2407 A Sam Houston Avenue.

Following a year that saw the school enrollment jump from 190 students to over 300, Heritage Champions Academy is now planning to continue that growth in other programs, including the athletic arena.

HCA Principal Jon Froelich has announced the addition of four new coaches to the athletic department including Barry Nichols, Bob Williams, Jaime Gonzales, and Jennifer Polk.

In addition to these four, HCA has added a total of 12 new teachers and staff members for the 2008-2009 academic year. The K-12 public charter school had an enrollment last year of 300 students, and projects to start this year with 350 students.



Alpha Omega Academy

Classes at K-12 levels will begin at the Alpha Omega Academy, located at 3891 state Highway 30 West, on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 8 a.m.

According to a school representative, enrollment at Alpha Omega has increased by about 45 students, and that increase will be complimented by the completion of a new on-campus building.

With the completion of the building, an additional 24 new classrooms will be available for use.

Little Red School House

The Little Red School House, located at 1900 Normal Park, will begin private classes for kindergarten students beginning Aug. 25 at 7 a.m.

Registration fee is $100 per student for the year, and infants through kindergarten-age students are accepted.

After school care will be available until 5:30 p.m.

Tomorrow’s Promise Montessori School

Students will begin classes at Tomorrow’s Promise Montessori School starting Aug. 25 at 8 a.m. at 2817 Old Houston Rd.

This school year, approximately 25 pre-kindergarten students and 15 K-6 students are enrolled at the school.

Students are not required to bring school supplies, only a $100 registration and material fee.

For this academic year, the school has added a new elementary teacher, Laura Caperton, who has her master’s degree, is certified in the Montessori method and is ESL-certified, as well.

Summit Christian Academy

Classes will begin at Summit Christian Academy, located at 3122 Montgomery Rd., on Aug. 25 at 8 a.m. for students between 18 months and grade 6.

According to an school representative, between 60 and 70 students will attend Summit Christian Academy this year.

In addition to a new teacher’s aid who will assist the staff for part of the day, a new teacher named Joyce Kumba was also added to the staff.
