Still time to register for summer art classes

By Holly Green
Staff Reporter

The Wynne Home Arts Center began its summer session of classes this week, and it is not too late to participate.

All classes are held at the Wynne Home located at 1428 11th Street.

Activities kicked off Monday night with a free movie celebrating America’s greatest dance team — Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

The free movie events, led by Sam Houston State University professor Ralph Pease, will also be held July 21 and 28 at 7 p.m. for ages eight and older.

Residents have a chance to get together to view two more films followed by discussion and refreshments.

Classes are limited to 35 people and children must be accompanied by adults.

Monday’s featured movie is “Top Hat.”

According to Pease, Astaire and Rogers “are at the top of their game in this clever, funny film.”

“The Story of Vernon and Irene” will be featured July 28.

Residents can also get creative in Kathy Cook’s scrapbooking Saturdays.

Classes, limited to 10 people per class at $20 per person, will be held July 19 and 26 from 1:30-4 p.m. for ages 12 to adults.

Cook, a Huntsville resident who has been scrapbooking for about eight years, said the class will open your eyes to new ideas.

“We will look at small books, 12x12 albums, folder books and pocket books,” she said. “I usually see what the class wants to do and go from there.

“You will get a lot of information and ideas in the class. Once people see what they can do, it’s amazing and a lot of fun. Scrapbooking has gotten so big ... you can go into Hobby Lobby and see huge sections of materials.”

Cook said materials will be provided, but they are encouraged to bring their own photos.

Due to limited space, other summer classes, including dance, water colors, ceramics and denim quilting, are full for this session.

Classes were organized by Wynne Home intern O’Neisha Plattenburg from Sam Houston State University.

The Wynne Home will offer its next session of classes in October.
