New Waverly Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Clay Webb was the recipient of high honors last week, being named the Region VI Superintendent of the Year on June 30.

The honor, sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), recognizes exemplary superintendents for excellence and achievement in educational leadership.

“I am so excited about it,” Webb said in a phone interview Thursday. “It is a high honor, and I thank the school board for recommending me for the award and my colleagues at TASB who made the decision.”

Webb has served as NWISD’s superintendent for the last five years, holding the same position at Goodrich ISD two years prior.

He began his 28-year career in education teaching government and economics at Karnes City High School. He then went on hold administrative roles at LaGrange, Alto and Huntsville ISD, where he worked for 10 years.

Despite all his experiences in education, Webb does not accept the Superintendent of the Year honor on his own behalf, but credits the successes of the district as the reason for his achievement.

“The award is given to a superintendent based on the successes of the school district,” Webb said. “Without those successes — the great performance of our students and teachers — I wouldn’t be receiving this honor.

“And we have an excellent school board here — one that sets the tone for my job as a superintendent,” he added. “They provide the support and resources needed to do what I need to do.

“New Waverly ISD has great kids, great teachers and a tremendous community.”

Webb was one of 16 Texas superintendents receiving the regional nomination for TASB’s Superintendent of the Year.

According TASB, all regional winners will be interviewed in August before five state finalists are named. The winner of the Texas Superintendent of the Year award will be announced Oct. 3 at the TASB Convention in Houston.

Webb’s wife, Susan, is a counselor at New Waverly Junior High. The couple have four grown children — two college graduates, one currently in college and the fourth to begin college in the fall.
