Commissioners approve road agreement, master forest plan

Walker County Commissioners Court approved a road project agreement and a master forest road agreement with the U.S. Forest Service during a special session Monday morning at the courthouse.

The road project agreement involves replacing a bridge in Precinct 4 in the Sam Houston National Forest while the master agreement involves a new list of roads in Precincts 2, 3 and 4 in the national forest that are maintained by the county.

Precinct 4 Commissioner Tim Paulsel said the road project involves constructing a new bridge on FDR 207 over Small Creek.

Paulsel said the forest service agrees to pay $86,000 for the 30-foot wide by 30-foot long bridge, covering the cost of materials and also labor to build the bridge.

The county would provide an in-kind service match of $68,000 in equipment and assist the contractor with construction of the bridge.

He said he hopes construction can start in July. He estimates the bridge to be 40 to 50 years old.

Also Monday morning, the court:

• Approved claim for $35,000 from Title III funds for purchase of brush truck submitted by New Waverly Volunteer Fire Department following presentation of documentation and audit.
