HPD: Tires slashed on 20 cars throughout city

By Kristin Edwards
Staff Reporter

The Huntsville Police Department is currently investigating a series of tire slashings which took place over the weekend in several areas around the city.

According to HPD Sgt. Jim Barnes, at least 20 cars belonging to 15 different owners or organizations, were damaged from late Saturday night until early Sunday morning, and an ongoing investigation is being held to determine who is responsible.

“We’ve had 15 total victims who had the tires of their vehicles damaged, including the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, a Harris County Sheriff’s Department vehicle that was up here by chance and two HPD vehicles,” he said. “Detective G.P. Shearer is currently investigating the incidents, and he’s chasing down numerous leads at this time.”

Barnes said vehicles were damaged in Elkins Lake, in the Avenues and at West Hill Mall.

At this point in the investigation, the series of incidents is thought to be related.

“We think all of the tire slashings are related,” Barnes said. “They all took place within the same period of time and we have several leads we’re going to be looking at.”

Until an arrest is made in the case, Barnes said the victims of the tire slashings are having to pay for new tires out of their own pockets.

“I’m guessing people will be able to file this on their insurance for right now,” he said. “What we’re hoping for is, once an arrest is made, that we can seek restitution and get these people compensation.”

Since the weekend, Barnes said the police department had received several calls from residents concerning the slashings and offering information.

“We appreciate any information that the public can give us that will help locate these individuals,” he said. “This case will be on CrimeStoppers soon, as well.”

With any information related to the tire slashings, contact the HPD at (936) 291-5480.
