Wynne Home spring classes begin today

By Holly Green
Staff Reporter

Today begins the Wynne Home Arts Center’s annual spring classes, but there is still time to sign up for activities.

A variety of classes for both adults and children will run through April 26 at the Wynne Home located at 1428 11th St.

Megan Bryant, intern at the Wynne Home, said a new scrapbooking class should be a big hit.

“We’re doing scrapbooking — that’s a big one,” Bryant said. “We’ve never offered this before. We’ll have classes held on five Saturdays that are all separate. Each class will teach you about a different scrapbook techniques.”

The scrapbooking classes — to be held March 29, folder scrapbook; April 5, pocket scrapbook; April 12, accordion scrapbook; April 19 and April 26, big album pages — will be taught by Kathy Cook.

Each class cost $20 and is limited to 10 participants, who must be 12 or older.

Bryant said another class — sun paints on silk — should also be a creative activity.

Tamara Chasteen will teach the class, offering both children and adults a chance to create their own unique scarf just in time for Mother’s Day.

“Sun paints on silk is a good family activity,” Bryant said. “It’s a unique way to design your own scarf to wear or use as a gift for someone.”

Classes, $25 each with a limit of six participants, will take place April 26 — adults 12 and older from noon to 2 p.m. and children age 6-12 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Bryant said Ralph Pease, a professor at Sam Houston State University, is also back with Movies 101, featuring three silent film comedians.

Films include “The Gold Rush,” featuring Charlie Chaplin on April 7, “The General,” featuring Buster Keaton on April 14, and “Safety Last,” featuring Harold Lloyd on April 21.

Classes are limited to 35 people, age eight or older, with no fee.

Other Tuesday classes beginning today through April 22 include creative sculpture taught by Ottis Hilburn — $25, from 4-6 p.m. with a limit of 12 participants; adult ceramics taught by Chasteen — $30, from 2-4 p.m. with a limit of 10 participants; kids ceramics taught by Chasteen — $30, ages 10-15 from 4-5 p.m. with a limit of 12 participants.

Wednesday classes beginning March 26 through April 23 include beginning painting for adults taught by Lee Jamison — $30, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a limit of 10 participants.

Friday classes beginning March 28 through April 25 include ballet taught by Robin Evans — $10, ages 6-10 from 4-5 p.m. with a limit of 12 participants.

Additional Saturday classes include children’s photography taught by Ahia Shabaaz March 29 — $10, ages 8-17 from 11 a.m. to noon with a limit of 10 participants; silk painting taught by Chasteen March 29 — $30, ages 12 or older from 10 a.m. to noon and 1- 3 p.m. with a limit of 10 participants; adult cooking taught by Ahia Shabaaz April 12 — $10, ages 18 or older from 10 a.m. to noon with a limit of six participants; card weaving taught by Chasteen April 19 — $30, ages 12 or older from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a limit of six participants.

Bryant said children must be dropped off and picked up at the classroom door.

“Anyone can register up until the day of each class,” Bryant said.

Parking is available across Avenue O west of the Wynne Home, along the side of the east of Avenue O and the 10th Street parking area of Eastham-Thomason Park.

To register for classes, visit the Wynne Home Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
