Texas Camellia Show set for Saturday

Huntsville resident Morris Waller expects the Texas Camellia Show, which drew in more than 200 visitors last year, to be find similar success on Saturday.

“It’s a very unique event for Huntsville,” Waller said of the show, which will feature about 400 different camellia blooms. “It’s an opportunity to see all kinds of camellias at one time in a different environment.”

The free public showing will take place in the community center at West Hill Mall from 1-4 p.m. There will be a judging of camellia blooms earlier in the day.

Waller, who has been a camellia enthusiast for approximately 12 years, said camellias have a popular following throughout the world. There are international, national and approximately 35 regional societies devoted to the winter-time flower. Waller currently serves as secretary for the International Camellia Society.

Camellia growers will by judged in accordance with the rules set by the American Camellia Society.

Waller said the judges look uniform characteristics such as size, color and form. Prizes will be awarded.

According to Waller, camellias originated in China and were brought to America by ship captains in the 1700s. He said there are about 35,000 different varieties.

“The camellia is a plant usually about three to four feet high with very slow growth,” Waller said. “It produces a bloom with velvety petals that lasts about two to three weeks.”

Participants interested in growing camellias will have the opportunity to purchase established plants at the show. Waller said 40 will be up for sale.

“Usually the best way to grow them is to buy an established plant,” he said.
