Lady Hornets bounce back from three-set loss to Brenham with three-game victory over Willis

Just days after getting knocked around by fifth-ranked Brenham, the Lady Hornets were anxious to get back home and get back on the winning track. Huntsville made short work of Willis on Monday, defeating the LadyKats in three games 25-16, 25-16 and 25-18.
“I think we did pretty well today,” Huntsville coach Brittany Brumbelow said. “We would do good for a while and then we would fall off for a little bit. But they did a good job of picking it back up tonight. I was proud with how we played tonight. It was good to get going again. We have three games this week, so it was good to start it off with a win. Hopefully, we can get three in a row.”
The Lady Hornets (4-3 in District 18-4A, 19-13 overall) came out aggressively right from the first serve and jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first game.
After trading points, Willis went on a little run to make it a 9-8 game. The two squads traded points throughout most of the first game. But late in the set, Huntsville pulled away, scoring seven of the game’s final eight points to score the first set.
In the second game, Willis did its best to keep up with Huntsville and they did for a little while. With the score tied at five points apiece, the Lady Hornets went on a run, scoring 12 of the next 13 points to build a huge 17-6 lead. The Lady Kats could only get as close as eight points before Huntsville closed out the second game.
The third and deciding game went pretty much the same for the Lady Hornets. Huntsville took advantage of Willis’ errors and miscues to build a huge lead.
The Lady Hornets led by as many as 11 points in the final game before finishing off the LadyKats with a three-point victory in the third game.
“We just came out tonight and played hard,” senior Sara Vaughn said. “Our passing was a lot better and we got our hits in this game. It just all kind of clicked for us.”
Vaughn led the team in kills with 11 and junior Tayler Gray led Huntsville in assists with 23.
The Lady Hornets will attempt to make it two in a row when they host Magnolia West on Wednesday with first serve at 6 p.m.
