Stories about Huntsville Hornet sports.

Speed to burn

They’re super quick, athletic and extremely fast. That’s how the Hornets are describing the Beaumont Central Jaguars, Huntsville’s opponent in the Class 4A Division I area playoffs.....more>>

  • Bearkats add arms
Sam Houston State head baseball coach Mark Johnson announced Tuesday the signing of four Texas high school players, plus one junior college player. The Bearkats’ latest recruiting class includes three left-handed pitchers, one right-handed pitcher and an infielder
Lefties Caleb Smith (Huntsville High School), Cody Dickson (Mansfield Summit) and Matt Walker (Robinson) will join right-handed pitcher Josh Ganze (Angleton) and infielder Jake Arrington (North Central College) on the Bearkats squad in 2011.

  • Hornets do it all
For about two minutes Tuesday, the Hornets looked like a team playing its season opener.

  • Total team effort
It all started with a punt. The Hornets turned a nerve-racking nail-biter into a full-bore blowout following Chris Crawford’s clutch 47-yard boot last Saturday at Georgetown’s Eagle Birkelback Stadium.

  • History-makers
GEORGETOWN — The Hornets weren’t going to let this one slip away.

  • Warning: Mistakes can be deadly
The Hornets learned a valuable lesson in the first round of the football playoffs last year.

  • Wild, crazy ride
Adapt, adjust and overcome. For the 2009 Hornets, that simple saying has become a way of life.

  • Watch out for Rebels
It would be a serious mistake, Hornets head coach Mitchell Coey says, to judge the Hays Rebels on their overall record this season. Huntsville’s bi-district opponent brings a 4-6 mark into Saturday’s playoff game, but Coey warns that records can be deceiving.
The Rebels are a dangerous bunch, a team that is playing its best football right now. After an 0-5 start, Hays won four of its next five games. The Rebels’ only loss during the second half of the regular season came in overtime to Del Valle, the eventual District 17-4A champ.

  • The press is on

  • Born to run
Years ago, young Jeremy LaDay found out that he could run long distances, and do it better than most boys his age. As a third-grader at Huntsville’s Stewart Elementary, LaDay dominated the running events during the school’s fun field day.
“I got a bunch of first places,” LaDay said Tuesday. “That’s when I found out I was a runner.”
