  • A verbal commit
The folks at Oklahoma State did not roll out the red carpet when Justin Gilbert and a few of his Huntsville football teammates visited late last month. But the Cowboys did show the Hornets around Stillwater and made them feel welcome.

  • Hornets win lineman challenge
The big boys who will anchor Huntsville High School’s offensive and defensive lines this fall are staying busy this summer, working on team chemistry and winning championships, too.

  • Planning ahead
Even though Caitlin Germany has another year left with the Lady Hornets volleyball team, she has already made plans for college. Germany accepted an offer to play volleyball for Louisiana Tech on a full scholarship.

  • Young Huntsville quarterback takes top prize at A&M camp
Huntsville sophomore Daniel Hazlewood returned to Aggieland for the second straight year, looking to sharpen his skills at a quarterback camp held on the practice fields at Texas A&M.
Hazlewood, who first began playing football in seventh grade, finished third in the skills competition part of the camp last summer. With a year of working with the Hornets under his belt, Hazlewood improved and returned to the quarterback camp this past weekend and won the first-place trophy in the sophomore challenge.
“It was a really good camp,” Hazlewood said Tuesday. “There were a lot of good coaches there. It was really fun.”

  • Former Hornet hurler selected in MLB draft
The day that former Huntsville baseball standout Jeremy Toole has been waiting for since he was youngster finally came.

  • ‘We couldn’t be more proud’
AUSTIN — Huntsville senior Kirby Ennis didn’t make it to the medal stand Friday, but he got close.

  • Helping the Hornets in a big way
Huntsville athletic director Mitchell Coey says a quiet little thank-you every time he opens the Hornets’ checkbook and orders some more shorts and shoes.
Baseball coach Jeff Brumbelow does the same when he needs a few new bats.
Coey, Brumbelow and all of their coaching companions say they are grateful to the folks who continue organizing the Ryan Osborn Memorial Golf Tournament, a communitywide event that has raised more than $120,000 in the past five years and donated it to Huntsville High School athletic programs, as well as youth sports organizations such as the Huntsville Boys Baseball Association and Huntsville Youth Football League.

  • No slowing down

  • Interim tag removed
Hornets assistant Jeff Brumbelow was thrown into the head coaching fire right before the start of the 2009 Huntsville baseball season.
