Elkins Lake break-ins investigated

The Huntsville Police Department is investigating a series of break-ins and an attempted break-in which have taken place in Elkins Lake since Oct. 10.The most recent event — an attempted break-in which took place early Wednesday morning — is the third occurrence which has affected the neighborhood.“We’ve actually had two actual break-ins and one attempted break-in,” HPD Sgt. Jim Barnes said. “Both of the actual break-ins and the attempted break-in were all concentrated near the entrance area of the neighborhood on the 200 block of Augusta Drive.”No one has been hurt in any of the instances, but there has been some property taken from one of the homes, Barnes said.“It appears the guy is looking for jewelry or money in these residences,” he said. “We haven’t had anything recently like this in Elkins Lake. We think, based on the proximity of the break-ins and the method of operation used, that the events are related and are the work of one individual.

HISD adopts tax measure

The Huntsville Independent School District board of trustees approved a resolution to tax tangible personal property in transit on Thursday night during a regular meeting.A required public hearing was held regarding the new legislation issue and there were no public comments.Grover Cook, chief appraiser for the Walker County Appraisal District, addressed the board on the resolution.“This is something that all municipalities and all school districts in the state are having to act on,” Cook said. “The hope is that it will be a benefit to commerce ... but there is no way to tell what kind of impact this issue will have on us — it could have a serious or slight effect.According to information presented by Robert Mott, attorney with the Perdu Brandon Fielder Collins and Mott law firm, the resolution gives the governing body of each taxing unit in the state the opportunity to tax “goods, principally inventory, that are stored in a location that is not owned by the owner of the goods and are transferred from that location to another location within 75 days.”The goods may be in the location for the purposes of assembling, storing, manufacturing, processing or fabricating purposes by the person who acquired or imported the property.”
