FBI: Hate crimes climb in 2006

WASHINGTON — Hate crime incidents rose nearly 8 percent last year, the FBI reported Monday, as civil rights advocates increasingly take to the streets to protest what they call official indifference to intimidation and attacks against blacks and other minorities.Police across the nation reported 7,722 criminal incidents in 2006 targeting victims or property as a result of bias against a race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnic or national origin or physical or mental disability. That was up 7.8 percent from 7,163 incidents reported in 2005.

Texas judge refuses to set execution date for death row inmate who wants to die

LIVINGSTON — The first letter, neatly handwritten on lined paper, arrived at the federal courthouse in Dallas nearly a year and a half ago with a simple address: U.S. District Clerk’s Office.“I am a college graduate and have no delusions what will occur as an end result of these proceedings,” death row inmate Michael Rodriguez wrote in the first of a series of notes to the courthouse.Rodriguez, one of the notorious Texas Seven, a group of inmates who escaped from state prison in 2000 and killed a police officer while on the lam, has dropped his appeals and wants to die.He can’t.

Voters approve east side fire station bond

he votes are in and the residents of Huntsville can look forward to the construction of a new fire station on the city’s east side. Huntsville and Walker County registered voters went to the polls on Tuesday to voice their opinion on the bond election and 16 proposed state constitutional amendments.About 76 percent of voters within the city limits were in favor of the fire station — 1,200 voting in favor and 374 voting against the project. Results showed that voters also favored the 16 proposed state constitutional amendments, passing every proposition.Election day brought in 1,832 ballots from polls located throughout the county — a total of 2,722, including early voting results.County elections administrator Tom Cauthen and Voter Registar Dee Brimer both said they expected a bigger turnout but that you never can tell.“It’s not a bad turnout,” Cauthen said. “It wasn’t a very publicized election ... but I figured more people in Walker County would come out and vote because of the money involved in this election.”
