Classes will be canceled at all New Waverly Independent School District campuses Friday in order to accommodate those who wish to attend the New Waverly High School Bulldogs’ state tournament game.
In a special meeting Wednesday, the NWISD board unanimously passed a motion to make Friday a vacation day and to hold classes on the previously-scheduled vacation day of May 26.
The game will be held Friday at 8:30 a.m. at the Erwin Center in Austin, and with the day off of school, NWISD superintendent Clay Webb said everyone who wishes to attend the game should be able to do so.
“We will be taking off Friday just to accommodate everyone wanting to go to the state tournament basketball game,” Webb said. “This is the first time we’ve ever qualified for a state championship game, so a lot of people want to try to go and support the Bulldogs.
“By switching the vacation days now, this gives people months to make any plans necessary for attending school on May 26.”
Webb said the board also considered holding classes on a day previously reserved for spring break, but they decided against that option due to the possibility that students have already established spring break vacation plans.
Tickets for the state game can be purchased at the front office of New Waverly High School for $10.
Two New Waverly fan buses will depart from New Waverly High School at 4 a.m. Friday and will return following the game. Ticket prices for a seat on the bus with driver gratuity included are $22 a person.
Bus ticket sales will end today at 3 p.m.
