Best Bets announcements are for non-profit groups wishing to announce a specific event. We will not run submissions which do not fit the guidelines of Best Bets not mentioned here. Roxie Douglas Learning Institute holds program

The Roxie Douglas Learning Institute, 718 10th St., will host its Ready to Learn & Read Program registration beginning Monday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Limited seats are available hourly from 4-8 p.m. $15 per hour or $50 per week. Sessions will be taught by certified teachers. Classes will begin June 9. For more information, call (832) 264-2410.



YMCA registering for summer day camp

The YMCA is now registering for summer day camp. The camp runs all summer long and is located at the Josey Boy Scout Annex. Camp is for children ages 5-12 and they must have completed kindergarten. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify. For more information, call (936) 295-8009.

The YMCA is also now registering for their new summer kickball program. Registration ends June 20 and the season starts July 7. Children must be ages 5-15 as of Sept. 1, 2008.



Boys & Girls Club of Walker County summer program

Boys & Girls Club of Walker County summer program will be at the Martin Luther King Recreation Center, 300 MLK Blvd. Summer Camp serving youth ages 5 to 13. There are only 100 slots available for camp. It is on a first come, first serve basis. Only taking monthly payments. There will be no weekly payments and no refunds. The only day the Club will be closed is July 4. If you have any questions, call the BGC office at (936) 291-6054.

Payment due by June 4 for June 9 through July 4, $30 per week, per child: $120 each. Payment due by July 4 for July 7 through Aug. 1, $30 per week, per child: $120 each. Payment due by Aug. 1 for Aug. 4-15, $30 per week, per child: $ 60 each. New 2008 member: $15 registration. Full summer payment is $300 per child for 49 days of programming Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with breakfast and lunch.

‘The Cemetery Club’ to open at Old Town Theatre

“The Cemetery Club” a comedy written by Ivan Menchell and directed by Nicole Wooddell of Spring, will be held May 8-10 and May 15-17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Old Town Theatre. A matinee performance starts at 2 p.m. May 18. Tickets are $5 for students, $8 for seniors and $10 for all others. Tickets will be available at the theater box office each night of a performance or in advance from Health & Energy and Nautilus. For advance ticket reservations, phone (936) 291-7933. The play is the Huntsville Community Theatre’s final show of the 2007-2008 season and features three Jewish widows who meet each month for tea before visiting their husbands’ graves, but things change when Sam the butcher meets the widows.

COME Center Building Groundbreaking Ceremony

The new COME Center Building groundbreaking ceremony will take place Saturday from 10-11 a.m. at 340 Highway 75 N, next to the Senior Center. There will be music and dancing by local groups. The center will also be selling barbecue plates for a minimum of $5 in order to raise funds for the center.



Madison County Writers Guild

Walker County Caregivers Appreciation Breakfast

The event is hosted by the Walker County Children’s Protective Service Board with entertainment for the children provided by CASA of Walker County.



Sunshine Network hosts rodeo day

The Sunshine Network will host local children with disabilities and their families for a rodeo event on Saturday at the B&R arena in New Waverly. Food, drinks, rides and games will be free of charge.

Activities for the children will begin at 9 a.m. Roping competition will begin at 7 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the New Waverly Volunteer Fire Department and the Sunshine Network. Local churches hold blood drive

Faith Lutheran Church, Wesley United Methodist Church and University Heights Baptist Church along with HMH Auxiliary will hold a blood drive Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Community Room at West Hill Mall. Trinity VFW dance

Heart Healthy Screenings

The Heart and Vascular Institute at Conroe Regional Medical Center is offering free heart healthy screenings at the hospital's new multi-specialty clinic location at 116A Medical Park Lane in Huntsville the week of May 12-16. The screenings are by appointment only and can be scheduled for the following times: Monday, Wednesday and Friday (May 12, 14 and 16) from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and Tuesday and Thursday (May 13 and 15) from 1-5:30 p.m. Each appointment takes about 30 minutes. Persons wanting to schedule an appointment can call toll free 1-800-538-9355 anytime. The screenings are offered at no charge.



Public Library to be closed for two days

Huntsville Public Library, 1216 14th Street, will be closed to the public on May 13 and May 14 for staff training. Materials will not be due either day. Library materials may be dropped in the drop box in front of the library.
